My son had another fun run event after school one day. There were quite a few kids participating in it. I was a bit put off as one woman decided to stand right in front of me when my son was running his lap. Grrrr. Anyway it was still a nice event.

I went back to one of my favorite spots, Falls Park in Greenville, SC. I am trying to get a good image of the Liberty Bridge, preferable with the waterfalls in it. It is a difficult image due to the bridge's unique construction and it's location. This time I thought I would try to use some HDR (high dynamic range) blending methods. The results are better than I have gotten in the past, but still not quite what I am wanting to ultimately capture.

The district scout organization has an annual Camporee for the Cub Scouts. It is an evening campout with various activities during the day and evening. Connor needed to camp out during this one for one of the requirements to get his WEBLOS badge.

Connor is in an after school "Fitness Club" program. They meet once a week and learn about physical fitness and play various activities. Throughout the year they all have the opportunity to participate in various "Fun Runs" held throughout the area. These are organized track-style meets at local stadiums. The most recent one was held at the South Carolina School for the Deaf and Blind. The event was organized by the local YMCA and attended by around a dozen local elementary school fitness/running clubs.

The kids were split into groups based on their school class(i.e. first grade, second grade, third grade, etc.). Each group then participated in three events: a distance run (lap around the track), a 100 yard sprint, and a long jump. The groups rotated through the events. At the end each child received a red ribbon for participating and a health snake of apple juice and pretzels.

The weather was quite pleasant. It was sunny, mild, with just enough of a breeze to keep it comfortable. Connor had a good time and that is the most important thing.

Here are some pictures for a trip to the Blue Ridge Parkway near Asheville, North Carolina. It was a short trip as the Parkway was closed due to snow, ice, and an accident further north. However, we did manage to get some Autumn sight-seeing in during the trip.

Connor's Weblos pack went on a five mile hike at Camp Croft State Park. The hike is a requirement for one of the achievements. It was overcast, but the light rain had stopped by the time we started the hike. The temperature was quite pleasant. The boys had fun and it was nice to get outside for awhile. However, I was a bit stiff the next morning.

The weather cleared so I went out to Falls Park in Greenville again. I'm trying to figure out the best way to photograph the Liberty Bridge that goes over the falls. The unusal design and location makes getting a good angle on it difficult. Still it is nice to try, and there are certainly some interesting and unusual angles available.

This is a new batch of smoke images. I haven't made any of these in a long time and I've changed to different post-processing software since the last set. It seemed like a good time to try these again. With this set, I tried mirroring the images so that they wouldn't all look like simple smoke photographs. I might add some more images to this gallery, so check back later in the week.

Niagara Falls Trip; July 17-25, 2009

We went to visit a friend that lives in Niagara Falls, Ontario for a week. On the way we stopped at the New River Bridge in West Virginia which is the longest single arch span in the Western Hemisphere. The next day we visited Presque Island State Park in Erie, Pennsylvania before arriving in Niagara Falls.

While we were in Niagara we spent two days at the falls themselves. Our friend took us on a hike down into the Niagara Gorge, later she showed us around Niagara-on-the-Lake, and Port Delhousie. The last evening we went back to the falls to see them light up the falls and watch the fireworks.

The weather was touch and go most of the time we were there although we did get a couple of days of sunshine. However, the skies were mostly gray, overcast and basically not photogenic. It made it hard to get good shots most of the time, but I did manage to get some that I liked.

Note: I took a lot of photographs over the week we were on vacation. Therefore, I don't have all of them sorted and processed yet. Keep checking back. I will be adding to this gallery until I am finished processing the select photographs.

Connor and I went out to the ponds at the Milliken Research Center. It was the first time that he had been there. The ponds are are of Milliken, Inc. corporate campus here in Spartanburg. The ponds and several acres of maintained wooded areas are open to the public to visit, picnic, walk, etc. The biggest draw to them are the various birds (ducks, geese, heron's, etc.) that live, hunt, or otherwise hang out around them. Families bring their children and feed the ducks and the fish in the ponds. People walk their pets. It is quite a nice local feature available to us thanks to one of the area's largest corporate residents.

While we were there, we got to watch and photograph the birds. Connor had a good time. He was getting into the entire bird watching thing. I showed him how to walk slowly so as not to scare the birds away too soon. This is particularly important with the great blue herons that live around the ponds. They don't like people getting too close to them, and carefully watch anyone that even appears to be walking toward them. They take off if anyone gets within 20-30 yards of them if you are lucky to get even that close.

Thanks to the afternoon thunderstorm pattern that we have had lately, there was quite a nice breeze and cloud cover to keep the summer's heat in check. Frankly, it was down right pleasant for a summer afternoon for the area.

We had a good time. I particularly enjoyed how much Connor seemed to enjoy it. Next time I promised him that we would take some bread so he could feed the ducks. I even managed to get a couple of nice shots of those finicky great blue herons in flight. A good day all around.

He took one of his balls and kicked it around the soccer field. I also got a few photographs at the Hub City Jams' monthly get together at Barnett Park.

We went to the Greenville Scottish Games at Furman University. The weather was actually quite pleasant. It was hot, but with enough of a breeze to keep it from being overwhelming. They also had plenty of tents this year for people to get some shelter from the sun if they needed it. We weren't able to see much of the athletic competions, but still had a good time. There was a sheep dog competition and a classic British Automobile show which we all enjoyed.
